Donald Trump has somewhat softened his earlier commitment to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, questioning the value of such a meetup. He mentioned that he “probably” will debate but “can also make a case for not doing it.”
In a Monday night interview with Fox News Channel, Trump was pressed multiple times about his willingness to debate Harris. His responses were less definitive than in previous statements. Initially eager to debate President Joe Biden, Trump has questioned the terms of the debate now that Harris is the Democratic candidate. He has also suggested changing the debate venue from ABC News, labeling it “fake news.”
Last week, Trump asserted his obligation to debate Harris, stating, “Oh yes, absolutely. I'd want to." However, in the recent interview, when host Laura Ingraham pressed him for a commitment, he said, “I want to do a debate. But I also can say this. Everybody knows who I am. And now people know who she is.” He concluded, “The answer is yes, I'll probably end up debating,” but added, “I can also make a case for not doing it.”
Trump has previously skipped debates, including all the 2024 Republican presidential primary debates, citing reasons such as timing and venue concerns. He clarified recent controversial comments about Christians not needing to vote after his election, urging them to vote this time to "straighten out the country." Trump has been criticized for using authoritarian language and his comments have alarmed many, especially given his actions following the 2020 presidential election.
